2012 College Visit
Good morning All,
I am sending out a few pictures from our college trip. It was a great trip, we had 15 children in all and made visits to:
Hocking Hills
Rio Grande
Shawnee State
Ohio University (a small group)
We were also able to visit with 2 of our girls who are now attending Shawnee State. It was so rewarding to see them there and see the growth in them over the past year.
This trip is one of the most impactful pieces of our job as getting a child to graduate and attend college despite all odds is the culmination of all of our efforts including the support from our manager, Woodward Trust and Faces w/o Places.
Thank you for supporting this trip and enjoy the photos,

Overview of Idea
Our Summer Camp is provided for children ages 5-12
experiencing homelessness. Two buses pick up children from 10 shelters,
motels and neighborhood stops in Greater Cincinnati. During the 8-week
camp children will be improving their reading and math skills and
participate in enriching experiences.
The Specifics: What will the $5,000 fund?
Support will enable us to help children experiencing
homelessness to improve their health, build their minds, and expand
their horizons; because access to education and enrichment opportunities
are often a challenge. Specifically, funding will be used to provide
healthy snacks and meals, outfit children with clothing and supplies
needed, and give children worthwhile experiences in their own community.

Volunteer at Goettafest to Benefit Faces without Places
GoettaFest is just that, a Festival dedicated to all things
Goetta! The first GoettaFest was held in
2001 and the Festival just keeps getting bigger and bigger each year. GoettaFest is held on the banks on the Ohio
River on the Kentucky side at, Newport on the Levee.
This year Faces without Places has the opportunity to staff
all the games at the festival—but we need your help, get your church, sports
team, colleagues, friends, and family to sign up and help us raise some funds
for children experiencing homelessness.
The funds raised through the games at Goettafest will to Faces without
Places, allowing us to provide resources to children experiencing homelessness.
Faces without Places works to keep children and youth
experiencing homelessness connected to their education. Faces without Places was founded in 1998 to support children experiencing
homelessness in Greater Cincinnati. $5,000 was raised to provide a bus to bring
children experiencing homelessness to a summer program. FwP provides
enrichment, summer programming, transportation, uniforms, supplies, field

How to Donate, without really Donating
We understand that times are tough; the economy still hasn’t fully recovered, the middle class is struggling—not to mention the working poor, and school districts across the nation are reporting a 20 percent increase in the number of children experiencing homelessness. There are still ways that you can help that won’t break the bank; in fact, you won’t even be touching the bank!
Shop at Kroger: All you have to do is register your Kroger Plus card www.krogercommunityrewards.com and enter non-profit code # 80507 and FwP benefits from your purchases (don’t worry you still get your fuel points!)
Shop Online: Use GoodShop.com and iGive.com shopping portals that donate a percentage of almost every purchase from nearly 3,500 stores and provide more than 100,000 coupons. Faces without Places is registered with both sites.
Search the Internet: GoodSearch.com is a Yahoo!-powered search engine that donates about a penny per search to your cause. You use it exactly as you would any other search engine, but each time someone does a search, a donation is made!
Donate airline, hotel miles, or credit card points : cash them in for gift cards to grocery stores, places like Wal-Mart and Target, or office supply stores so we can serve our families or meet our office needs or for something more luxurious for the Yellow Bus Ball.
Dine Out: Register your credit card numbers on GoodDining.com and 6 percent of the money spent on the meal at 10,000 restaurants across the nation will be donated to Faces without Places.
Volunteer: There are a handful of companies that match volunteer hours with funds. For example, Microsoft will match volunteer time at $17 an hour through its Volunteer Time Matching program. Boeing, Exxon, Intel, Chevron, and Bank of America have similar programs.
Cash in your Change: every day you come home and empty your pockets of change, or some days you sit on the couch and your pockets are emptied for you. What if you kept that change in a jar and cashed it in every couple of months and sent it in to FwP?
Together we can keep children experiencing homelessness connected to their education!

Put the Fun in Fundraising!
Having a birthday party for a FwP can be quite rewarding. Rather than accepting birthday presents one year, consider asking your friends to buy things for a local charity that you strongly support. Not only would children experiencing homelessness benefit from your friends and families efforts, but a few other positive outcomes may arise. Imagine the satisfaction and selflessness that would come along with organizing such a party. Also imagine the feeling of pure joy you will receive when you donate to FwP knowing you have really made a difference. And now that all of those friends and family that are now aware of the organization you support, it may inspire them to do a similar party or maybe volunteer with that particular organization. Doing such a selfless service may have a ripple effect in those around you and can only bring about positive outcomes. Donations, awareness, and the feeling of satisfaction are all awaiting you if you just take the time to have a party for a cause.

Children Experiencing Homelessness Receive Once in a Lifetime Opportunity
Frederick Douglass Elementary has one of the largest numbers
of students experiencing homelessness this school year with over sixty children
affected. Through the program “Education without Boundaries,” students are
given the opportunity to work towards an educational field trip to Chicago
(fourth and fifth grade) and Washington DC (sixth through eighth grade) at the
end of the school year by maintaining high grades, consistent attendance, and
good behavior.
The total cost of the trip is $600 and the students worked
with the school to fundraise for half of the trip, leaving the other half to be
paid for by the student’s family. Due to the financial status of the children
experiencing homelessness, their parents have been unable to provide the other
half.
Faces without Places
is providing the remaining funds to support the 14 students experiencing
homelessness to have this once in a lifetime academic opportunity. Enabling
these students to go on the field trip will allow the students to learn about
history, culture, college and the multitude of opportunities outside of Cincinnati.
Faces without Places will be presented a check amounted $4,200
to the program’s lead teachers and principal of the school on Wednesday, April
18th, 2012 at 1pm.

A Day to Remember!
By: Brittany L. Webb
Each year, Faces without Places and Project Connect hosts an eight week summer camp for children experiencing homelessness in the Greater Cincinnati area. Campers come five days a week for days filled with academics, in reading and math, and plenty of fun! At the conclusion of camp each year there is an entire day dedicated to showcasing what the campers have learned while attending the Project Connect summer camp. This year the theme of the camp was “Play Smart, Eat Smart, BE Smart,” and concluded with a health fair that took place on Wednesday, July 27th, the day before camp ended for the summer. The camp was a huge success and was highly supported by families of the campers, volunteers, media coverage and plenty of dedicated workers.

The health fair included many fun activities such as games, healthy food and drink, craft projects and even a fire safety simulation presented by the Cincinnati Fire Department through the use of a “smoke house” that guests were given the opportunity to visit right on site of the health fair.

Another organization who partnered with Project Connect and participated in the health fair is the Children’s Hunger Alliance. Throughout the eight weeks of camp AmeriCorps members, Missy Miller, Summer Craig, and Karima Samadi, came to camp several times a week to educate children on what it means to live a healthy lifestyle.
AmeriCorps members from The Children’s Hunger Alliance, Miller, Craig, & Samadi, as well as OASHF AmeriCorps VISTA members from Faces without Places, Beth Griffith-Niemann, Jen Difilippo, and Brittany Webb played a large role in the health fair by setting up several booths of fun, hands-on, engaging activities to teach children about healthy food options, as well as providing all of the healthy food and drinks for the day. Other organizations who were involved in the health fair include, the YMCA, Happen Inc., and the Cincinnati Circus, who also set up booths that included engaging activities for health fair guests.

At the conclusion of the health fair this year, and after a busy day of great food and activities, the campers were given a huge surprise! Thanks to partnerships between the Children’s Hunger Alliance, Panera Bread and Wishes for Wheels, each individual camper was awarded with a brand new bike and helmet. For several of the children at camp this year this was their very first bike, and by the looks of joy on their faces this reality was very obvious. The bikes were delivered to the children and their families that evening and the next evening after camp had concluded for the day. The bikes were truly the icing on the cake for a great health fair and an even greater eight weeks of camp!
